Strategy Board Games
Games that involve strategy can be the most difficult to master, but also the most addictive once you do. These types of family board games require you to always be one step ahead of your competition in order to come out on top. So if trying to figure out your next move in taking over the world or discovering whether or not Miss Scarlett used the revolver to kill the butler sounds like a good time to you, then strategy games are probably right up your alley. Here's a few to check out…
RISK
History is written by the victors! The classic Game of Global Domination has been reinvented with revised rules for faster game-play, and two new, exciting levels of play: Basic Training and Command Room.
Capitals and cities give you extra troops. Minor and major objectives give you additional goals and possibly extra abilities.
In Basic Training, you must accomplish 3 objectives to win — they don't give you any special abilities. In Command Room, you must accomplish 3 objectives — and they do give you special abilities. In World Conquest, you must take over the entire world — and get to use the special abilities of objectives you achieve. In all 3 versions, you must control your capital to win.
EXPLORERS
The adventure scenarios are the actual journeys of such explorers as Marco Polo, Nansen, Scott, Drake, Cook, etc. Players pick a journey, make preparations, assemble crews & venture forth. They make the trip together, each handling different aspects of the expedition. Lots of adventure & an educational eye-opener about the life of explorers. A good family & classroom game.
HARE & TORTOISE
In the classic Hare and Tortoise players are racing their rabbits around the course, as fast as they can. Players must learn how to moderate their movement, however; because carrots are needed for movement, and the only way to get more is to move backwards! Players must balance the patient movement of a turtle, while making leaps forward when they can to win this race. An excellent exercise in arithmetic, this gem of a game handles up to six players and offers many choices and decisions, as players zoom their rabbits around the track.
